Don’t Fret, Small Business: You’re protected

Small businesses in California used to have all sorts of problems when attempting to find quality health care coverage. Small business owners were finding that when they called health insurance companies for a quote the companies were either not revealing every plan they offered or instead simply refusing to insure the employees of the small business. If small business owners managed to find coverage they were finding that their policies were being abruptly cancelled without much notice, leaving them to start the entire process all over again. Obviously, small businesses were not receiving much love from the health insurance companies.

Why were small businesses having so many problems? Health insurance companies would much rather insure a large company because they are automatically handed a large group of new customers. Small companies also have a propensity towards folding, and this does not make for good business for the health insurance company. Consequently, employees for the health insurance companies were trained, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to dissuade certain small businesses from attempting to obtain health insurance coverage.

Health insurance companies are no longer allowed to hide certain coverage plans from people when they call to get a quote and instead must present every available option for coverage. Also, health insurance companies are not allowed to deny coverage to small businesses solely based on the fact that they are small businesses. Once coverage is in place there is a certain notification procedure which must be followed if the coverage is to be cancelled by the insurer, and there is additional legislation which protects small businesses from some types of insurance coverage cancellations.

With all this legislation in place small businesses have an easier time when it comes to obtaining quotes and other information for their employees’ health care needs. In fact, not every health care provider shrinks away from providing health care insurance to small businesses. There are some insurance companies who specialize in insuring small businesses, and just about every major insurance company has some sort of coverage available as well. Small business owners will find that premiums for their employees are going to be somewhat expensive.

Monthly premiums are more expensive for small businesses than they are for larger companies, simply because there are less people paying for the insurance coverage. Small business owners also need to be aware that they have the option of paying a portion of monthly premiums for employees, in fact some employers pay most, if not all, monthly insurance premiums to attract and retain quality employees. After all, many people will look past lower-than-average wages if the benefits are excellent. In a state like California where the cost of living is so high and health insurance is a major factor an employer can really attract the best people for the job if he or she is willing to pay the majority of health insurance cost for employees.
