Medical Insurance In California
How to Switch Medical Insurance Plans
There may come a time when a person decides that their current health insurance plan just isn’t cutting it anymore. Maybe the person is fed up by not being able to select their own physician, or perhaps the monthly premiums are outrageously expensive. Other times sub-par, or nonexistent, customer service can push a person to decide to fire their current health care provider.
The truth is that there is no reason to remain with a particular health care provider if they provide unsatisfactory service. People often forget that they are the ones paying for the health insurance. The insurance company is working for the individual, not the other way around. Luckily for Californians there are many willing companies in the state that are anxiously awaiting a phone call. Getting a quote is usually pretty easy, so there really is no reason for a dissatisfied customer to not shop around a little.
One thing people should consider attempting prior to switching medical insurance providers is to first contact their current provider and address whatever issue is causing the dissatisfaction. If high monthly premiums are the issue maybe it is time for a policy review. There may be something the company can do to lower the premiums. If the problem is lousy customer service then a nice long chat with a manager may do wonders. Companies would much rather take the time to retain an existing customer rather than spend the time and money necessary to recruit new ones. No wonder they try their best to talk customers into staying.
If the current health insurance company is not willing or able to fix whatever is wrong then it is time to do some comparison shopping. Yes, shopping for health insurance is not anyone’s idea of a good time, but is should be considered a necessary evil. It is important, however, to take the necessary time to fully understand any potential new health insurance policies. If a person is blinded by a much lower monthly premium they may glaze over the fact that the policy does not offer the same coverage as the previous policy did. It would be a shame to discover this when at a doctor’s office as the front desk receptionist announces the insurance does not cover the cost of the visit.
Sometimes people who are shopping for new health care coverage do not take the time to check out the company offering the coverage. Although there are some larger insurers who have impeccable reputations there are plenty of other companies which aren’t so well known. In some cases these companies may not even be licensed to sell health insurance. Customers pay their premiums faithfully month after month and then are surprised to find that they aren’t really covered after all. There are a couple of different ways to check out the gauge the credibility of a health insurance company. The Better Business Bureau keeps some information on record regarding health insurance companies, and there is also a rating system called the AM Best rating which classifies various health insurance companies based on their history. Never purchase a policy simply to save money from a company which received poor ratings …it will not be much of a savings if it turns out the policy was never valid to begin with.
