Texas Medical Insurance
State Assisted Health Care
Not everyone in Texas can afford to purchase their own insurance either individually or through their place of employment, and many of these same people make just over the amount necessary to qualify for state-sponsored medical insurance programs. Texas has a few different programs available to these people, particularly to children, to ensure that nobody goes without medical care.
CHIP stands for Children’s Health Insurance Program. It is a state sponsored program which helps parents with the aforementioned financial issues to get the health care they need for their kids. CHIP is not necessarily an easy program to get into since the income restrictions are so specific, but for the families who manage to get enrolled the benefits are great. Preventative care is the main concern; services like immunizations and routine check-ups are covered in an attempt to stop children from getting sick in the first place. Preventative care is one of the first things parents will skip out on when money is tight. This results in a chain of events which eventually spirals into children only seeing a doctor after an ailment has reached critical levels. It would probably actually cost less to have the preventative care and not get the ailment in the first place, or at least to catch the ailment early enough on to where it does not turn into something major.
People who do not qualify for CHIP or other state-run programs may find that with some budgeting they can actually afford an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plan. Although this medical insurance plan has its critics for being inflexible and impersonal it is certainly better than no insurance whatsoever. With an HMO, monthly premiums are generally much lower than with any other medical insurance plan. Deductibles and co-payments for prescription drugs and office visits are lower too. If a person can obtain medical insurance coverage in the form of an HMO plan then they should definitely look into it. In some cases employers will pick up some, if not all, of the costs of monthly premiums. These sorts of employers may be few and far between, but in some instances an employer may be persuaded to start picking up the tab for employees if they begin to realize that the better the benefits, the higher to retention and recruitment rate for their business.
For people who can afford their own medical insurance, either through work or individually, it is important to full understand the costs associated with a medical insurance plan. Many people simply assume that something would be covered by their medical insurance plan, such as maternity benefits or prescription drug coverage, but the fact of the matter is that oftentimes plans don’t cover these sorts of things and the insured people don’t find out until they attempt to submit a claim. This can get costly indeed. In some cases medical insurance companies will allow people to add additional needed benefits to suit their needs, but this is at an added expense. Medical insurance in Texas isn’t ever necessarily cheap, but it is indeed necessary.
